Gemenc

One You Won’t Want to Miss

If you’re staying in the area, Gemenc is well worth a day trip of its own.One of Europe’s largest continuous floodplain forests, its unique landscape has been shaped by the Danube: river branches, oxbow lakes, wetlands and dense forests create a rich habitat for wildlife. Red deer, wild boar, roe deer, beavers and many other species live here.

There are several ways to explore the forest. Set off on foot or by bike, or take one of the most distinctive options: the Gemenc Forest Railway. The narrow-gauge railway runs into the forest from the Ecotourism Centre in Pörböly , where you can also plan walks and hikes of different lengths. Nature trails, oxbow lakes and wildlife observation points make the journey even more interesting.

For a special destination, visit the Titan of Pörböly, one of Gemenc’s best-known trees. If you’d rather discover the floodplain from the water, guided canoe tours and sightseeing boat trips are also available in the area.

In autumn, Gemenc shows a completely different side. The changing colours of the forest are reason enough to visit, while the red deer rut is one of the region’s most remarkable natural experiences. Special programmes and forest railway trips are organised during this period, so you can even plan an evening excursion into Gemenc.

A Few Personal Recommendations

There are plenty of places and activities we love in the area, but here are a few we’re especially happy to recommend.

If You’re Visiting with Children

A ride on the Piriponty sightseeing trainis a fun addition to an afternoon in Baja. It’s an easy and playful way to explore the town together and an adventure in itself for children. If the weather calls for an indoor activity, Légvárvilág (inflatable park) or the recently renovated Piriponty Játszóház indoor playground are also good options.

We definitely wouldn’t miss Gemenc and Pörböly . The forest railway is an experience in itself, but it’s worth leaving time for a walk or short hike in the forest too.

Luckily, Baja has plenty of great places to choose from. Some of our favourites are Tanyacsárda, Potyka Csárda, Borbistro, Véndió Étterem, Vizafogó Étterem and Haloda. For something more casual, we also recommend I Love Pljeszkó Büfé. And if you’re craving something sweet, try Andi’s cakes and ice cream at Mézes Tortaműhely.

Head towards Hajós . The wine-cellar village is a unique place for a walk in itself, and with a wine tasting or cellar visit, it can easily turn into a full afternoon out.

A Place to Set Off From

and Come Back To

Spend a day in Gemenc, hop on a bike, take a walk around Baja or sample the flavours of the region. At the end of the day, Kamado will be waiting for you, ready for the evening to continue over a shared dinner, a glass of wine and a long conversation.
